S' Thomas College Gurutalawa has come a long way since may 12th June 1942 when it began as a branch of the parent school with fifty five boarders and two day boys.

From it's very inspection S. Thomas' College, Gurutalawa has been a school where boys of many races and religious mingled freely and harmoniously. Even in the dark days of 1958 and later in 1983 racist feelings were never tolerated in the school.

It's distinctive character lies in the fact that it has always been and always be a boarding school. Many of it's old boys have spent their entire school life in the boarding house. it became for them a home away from home. The feeling of belonging to a large family explains the deep attachment which generations of boys have for the school.
